I really wanted to hit 70 miles this week but I tweaked my knee (the left one this time) on Saturday night. I wasn't even running, just stumbling around my apartment after coming home from drinking too many beers. I didn't hit it on anything, just was walking around and pulled something in the knee cap region. Very weird and hurt like a bitch on Sunday (hence the only 3.8 miles) but I think (hope) it's going to go away fast.

Tues: 7 miles -- Riverfront
Wed AM: 5.4 miles -- Dreadmill
Wed PM: 6.6 miles -- Riverfront
Thurs AM: 6.9 miles -- Riverfront
Thurs PM: 7.4 miles -- Riverfront
Fri AM: 6.4 miles -- Midtown Crossing, Creighton, Dahlman and back
Fri PM: 3.4 miles -- Riverfront
Sat: 4.06 miles -- KUMC to Plaza and back, Kansas City
Sun: off
Weekly Total: 54 miles
Finally got back to doing two-a-days this week. It was cold as a mother every morning (and most nights). I tried the dreadmill at the work gym one morning but it was so terrible I decided I'd just rather run outside even if I have to freeze my ass out. Save for the weekend, this is about where I want to be as far as daily mileage goes.

Week Summary: Nov 28 - Dec 4
Mon: 5.3 miles -- Riverfront
Tues: 8.64 miles -- UNO and back
Wed: off
November Total: 232 miles
Thurs: 6.31 miles -- Riverfront
Fri: 6.78 miles -- Riverfront
Sat: off
Sun: off
Weekly Total: 27 miles
Another weak week mileage-wise. Since getting back from Colorado my right knee has flared up again but in a different spot (kneecap). I can't help but think this was somewhat brought on by not taking flaxseed oil for six days. Whatever it is, I need to get it under control soon so I can get back the consistency I had during the summer.

Not exactly what I wanted mileage-wise for this week but I guess that's what happens when you take two days off.

AM: 5 miles -- ???? random trail run with the dog
PM: 3 miles -- Down Thames and up Star Ranch (walking)
Most of today was spent walking. It's probably for the best because my knee is sore and I'm going up steeper climbs than I'm used to in Omaha.

The knee is starting to act up and I can't help but think it's because I haven't been taking flaxseed this week.

A lot of people make it a point to go running the morning of Thanksgiving. I guess I decided to do the opposite.

16 miles -- Broadmoor Bluffs to Cheyenne Mountain State Park and back
I don't even know if I can really qualify this as a run because I was walking almost half the time. I blew up about halfway and it was just bad news all the way back.

13 miles -- Broadmoor Bluffs to ??? to Cheyenne Mountain State Park and back.
The majority of this run was on dirt. The change from pavement was nice. CMSP has some good trails but it is basically impossible to access on foot unless you trespass. The outer edge of the park is just over a mile from my house via neighborhood streets, but there is no legal entrance if you go this way. The trails are literally fifty yards from the street but they're shut off by no trespassing signs and barbwire fences. Normally I'd just hop the fence but I get nervous because the entrance to NORAD is so close by. I think I finally found a decent access point for the rest of the week though. Since these are the closest trails to my parents' house I will likely stick with them for the rest of this Thanksgiving week.
Saw this quote today from Ryan Holiday: "Running to train for a marathon is like being a good person so you can get into heaven. The means is right but the end is all wrong. You glorify a bogus God." I think this is my new second favorite running quote, just behind Chlouber's "Make friends with pain and you will never be alone."

Monday Night Football/Happy Hour took precedence. I will be in the Springs for the next six days so I should be able to get in some good mileage (and some on trails for a change!).

AM: 5.1 miles -- Riverfront to Miller's Landing and back
PM: 12.1 miles -- Pedestrian Bridge to Veteran's Memorial Highway to Judy and Mike's
Weekly total: 75 miles
Run commute again tonight to go get my car from my uncle's. Was supposed to be 10 miles but took a wrong turn. I ended up having to run across a few highways and traverse a pretty sketchy old railroad bridge to get back on track. It was fun but I need to tone these kinds of adventures down before I end up getting hurt. Overall though this was the most solid week of running I've had since mid-August.

9 miles -- Pedestrian Bridge to Harrah's to Dahlman Park and back
At some point I'm going to have to start kicking up the weekend mileage. But with a cold front closing in this morning that threatened to literally freeze my twig and berries off today was just not the day to crank out a long run.

9 miles -- Pedestrian Bridge to I-29 overpass and back
One fun thing about training for an ultra is I can eat shit before/during a run and chalk it up as "digestive training." Tonight: a Double Don and strawberry margarita during happy hour about forty-five minutes before this 9 miler. I actually felt completely fine--better than average even. As of right now I have a lot of disadvantages in attempting to run an ultra (weight, lack of experience, lack of elevation training, etc.). But I feel like my stomach is pretty solid. I can pretty much eat whatever I want before or during a run and digest it on the go.
I know I keep saying it but tonight's weather I feel was absolutely perfect for a run. 45 degrees, clear with a very light breeze. I had the riverfront path completely to myself, except for some creepy coyote/dog thing I'm pretty sure I saw lurking in the darkness. Might have to invest in some mace for these types of night runs.

AM: 6.9 miles -- Home from Sarah's
PM: 5.1 miles -- Freedom Park and back
Weird how the run at 5:30 this morning seemed about four times longer than the one at 5:30 at night when it was actually less than two miles more. 40 miles on the week so far is exactly where I want to be right now though, so I'm pleased.

Run commuting is the perfect way to kill two birds with one stone. It's nice to run point to point rather than loop or out-and-back. Also, this way I force myself into doing another run to get home tomorrow morning. The only problem is running with a backpack absolutely sucks.

12.5 miles -- Pedestrian Bridge to Ameristar to ??? to Dahlman Park and back
The trails over on the Iowa side of the riverfront have been all fucked up since the flooding and now they're doing all this construction. Tried to find a way around so I could make a loop back across the Veterans Highway but the trail was completely blocked. I ended up looking like a total douche stomping through a bunch of weeds next to the highway. Overall this was a very solid run though. Minus the wind it was damn near perfect weather again. I'm loving November so far.

Great weather tonight. I felt a little sluggish, probably from all the shit I ate and drank over the weekend. I've been reading a lot about paleo eating lately and I'm going to try to incorporate more of that mindset into my grocery/cooking habits.

AM: 0 miles -- Breakfast at 11worth Cafe.
PM: 10 miles -- Iowa Riverfront to Two Rivers Park and Back.
So pissed I didn't get the 11 miler in tonight. Only had about an hour and forty-five minutes before my girlfriend was going to pick me up so I was booking it. I'd done this route before and thought it was 11 miles but turned out to be exactly 10. If I had time I'd go out and do another mile right now but sadly I don't. I ruined 11/11/11, everyone can blame me.

AM: 5 miles -- Pedestrian Bridge to I-480 overpass and back
PM: 10.25 miles -- Leavenworth to UNO Campus to Western and back through Dundee
First two-a-day in awhile. Ran east to watch the sunrise in the morning and west for the sunset in the evening. I surprised myself with the evening run as I was shooting for 8-9 miles.
I don't know why, but sometimes when I'm running I get this weird vibe that I'm pissing people off just by being out there. Especially when it's cold and dark. Some girl driving by tonight yelling "Fuck you!" out her window didn't help this paranoia. As a runner though you're forced to shrug this sort of thing off--it's impossible to catch the person and put the hammer down. If someone yelled that at me while I was driving I'd probably go into a road rage and chase the person down. With running I've usually got an endorphin buffer going and I just laugh at it.
Tomorrow is 11/11/11 and I already have breakfast planned at the 11worth Cafe. Gonna try to get off work early so I can get in an 11 miler tomorrow afternoon. The dream is becoming a reality!

8.5 miles -- Farnam to Memorial Park to Dundee and back.
One of the fun perks of running is listening to the weird shit people yell at you from their cars. Tonight was one of the weirdest I've heard: some guy stopped at a red light rolled down his window and simply yelled, "It's cold!" Alright, guy. Fair enough.
I'm really starting to enjoy this night running business. Routes I've done many times during daylight seem completely different when it's dark.

12 miles -- Benson and back.
Weekly Total: 42 miles.
This route was great. Took Farnam then crossed over through Memorial Park and up Happy Hollow towards Benson. The whole Happy Hollow/Dundee neighborhood is just awesome. I love all the different architecture of the homes in that area. Benson is a little rundown but it's pretty cool too.
Clear and perfect running weather today. I'll have to see how my knee responds to a run this long. This is the farthest I've gone since the ADT marathon over Labor Day.

9.5 miles -- Target and back.
I've been meaning to pick up a pair of running pants before it gets really cold but my car has been in the shop for the past week. So today I just ran out to Target, bought the pants, put them on, ate lunch and ran back. I also picked up some flaxseed oil capsules. Over the summer I started taking three fish oil capsules a day to help with soreness and it definitely seemed to help. For the past two months though I stopped because I wasn't running as much. Now with this nagging knee pain I decided I'll try omega 3 supplements again. I'm going with flaxseed because it's cheaper and I won't have to worry about toxins from factory farmed fish. I'm also going to significantly up the dosage. The manufacturers recommend three capsules a day but from what I've researched online 8-10 capsules per day seems more appropriate for healing injuries.

5.75 miles -- Henry Doorly Zoo and back.
Not as far as I wanted to go tonight but my knee was acting up so I turned around early. Having to scale back due to injury is frustrating but it's not as difficult for me as it used to be. When I first started running seriously I felt like I had something to prove with how many miles I went each day. Now that I know what I can do it's easier to back off when I need to without feeling like I'm being lazy or scared.

7.3 miles -- Centurylink Center to Pedestrian Bridge to Harrah's and back past TD Ameritrade.
Totally shitty weather today. Gray with rain all day that ended up turning into the first snow of the season. Luckily it was just warm enough that none of it stuck around. It actually ended up being perfect for running and I basically had the Riverfront to myself. Only saw two other people out, one walker and one other runner absolutely booking it across the bridge. I used to skip days like these but going forward I'm going to make a point to get out there in the "bad" weather. The extra pain in the ass is worth it for the empty paths and change in perspective. Also, I don't usually see my Arch Nemesis out on days like today.

7.5 miles - Pedestrian Bridge to Harrah's and back.
Longest I've run in awhile. I'm still fighting pain in my lower lateral knee. I've been taping it pretty tight and that seems to help.
Sidenote: I'm writing this very sentence at 11:11 on 11/1/11. Got depressed that 11/1/11 was almost over until I remembered it's only ten days until 11/11/11. I'll have to try to remember to do eleven miles on that day and maybe even eat breakfast at the 11worth Cafe. Okay, I'm done.
Peace easy.
